      1. Renee Turner

supervisor between November 2014 and July 2018

      2. Renée Turner is an artist and writer. Working primarily with digital media, Turner’s projects explore female identity, narratives of the archive, online media ecologies, and critical forms of pedagogy. Next to working individually, she has collaborated under the collective name, De Geuzen: a foundation for multi-visual research. The group’s projects have showcased in Rhizome, Mute, and Thames and Hudson’s Internet Art, and exhibitions such as Manifesta, the Bienal de Valencia, and Artefact.

Currently, one of her main research areas focuses on how digital media and narrative strategies can be used to enliven archival material and highlight complex, and at times contradictory, histories. With the support of the Creative Industries Fund NL, Turner is developing ‘The Warp and Weft of Memory’ with Castrum Peregrini and Kate Pullinger. The result will be an online narrative exploring the wardrobe of Gisèle d’Ailly van Waterschoot van der Gracht, and the ways in which its collection of artifacts reflects upon her life, work, and various interwoven histories.

Parallel to her practice, Turner has been actively engaged and committed to art and design pedagogy. She has taught at different institutions and served as the Director of the Piet Zwart Institute for four years. Currently, she is a Research Lecturer, spearheading research across the bachelors and masters of the Willem de Kooning Academy.

Research areas of supervision: digital media ecologies, gender, cultural heritage, narratives of the archive, feminism(s), critical approaches to art and design pedagogy
