Visual artist and artistic researcher Krien Clevis is the first PhDArts student to receive her PhD from Leiden University. On Thursday 17 October at 4.15 p.m. she will defend her doctoral project.

Integral part of her doctoral degree is an exhibition in the Oude UB (Bestuursgebouw) The Once and Future House. The exhibition opens on Friday 13 September at 4.00 p.m.
As an artist, Clevis is fascinated by the phenomenon of place in relation to beginnings and final destinations. This study links up the concept of place with memory, with the idea of transience and the transition from life to death. Her main research question addressed the following concern: how can I present my work in a way so that it both comprises a representation of place and emerges or exists as a place itself? Clevis guides the reader and the visitor on a journey through time and space. In Rome and Pompeii she studied the houses of the living and those of the dead (tombs); the meaning of passageways and thresholds proved crucial. In the Oude UB Clevis constructs the most important room of the classical atrium house, the tablinum or Family room, with the threshold to the garden of Rapenburg 70. In this house she shows her photographs. The old display (original book) cases, will be transformed to Wunderkammer. A scale model of the atrium house and a film complete the exhibition.
