One-day workshop on the development of Darwin's theory of biological evolution.
It is not possible to pinpoint a single eureka moment in the development of Darwin’s theory of biological evolution. Darwin developed his ideas by acute observations, exchanging ideas with many other naturalists, animal and plant breeders, but especially by achieving what philosophers refer to as consilience. In his lecture Tijs Goldschmidt will focus on this concept to illustrate how crucial innovations in evolutionary thinking were achieved.
Tijs Goldschmidt (1953) is a biologist and writer. He has published, among others, Darwins Hofvijver (nominated for the AKO-literatuurprijs) and the essay collections Oversprongen en Kloten van de Engel. In 2001 he received the Jan Hanlo-essay award. In 2007 he was chosen to hold the Huizinga lecture with the title Doen alsof je doet alsof.
