Historical photographic images are easily disconnected from their authorship, meaning and context. This means that the interpretation of the images depends both on accompanying information and on the practiced eye and the knowledge level of the spectator.

The possibilities digitalisation offers and an ever growing availability of images means that artists increasingly work with historical images. What do they do with these images? How do they contribute to the awareness of what we see and how we interpret this? How do they use historical images in such a way that they do not violate the past, but rather create space for a critical way of viewing?
