Research summary
The Variational Status (Figures of Resistance)
Riccardo Giaccioni investigates how and under what circumstances a story may survive outside official historiography, through the artistic means of film, installation, performance and publications.
Biography
Riccardo Giacconi (1985, IT) works as an artist and researcher. He has studied fine arts at the University IUAV of Venezia, at UWE in Bristol and at New York University.
His research concerns narratives, that is, the way certain systems narrate themselves. Such systems may be social contexts, cultural traditions or genres, institutions, political movements or, simply, personal relationships. One of the central interests in his recent work regards the production of contexts and dynamics that surround the performative aspect intrinsic in narrative forms. The study he has been carrying on in the last years, attempts to investigate social and political conditions in which both language and narratives operate within given cultural systems, as well as their modes of operation.
His work has been exhibited in various institutions, such as tranzitdisplay (Prague), MAXXI (Rome), Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Turin) and in the “Résonance” section of the Lyon Biennale. He was artist-in-residence in Viafarini (Milan), lugar a dudas (Cali, Colombia), MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome and La Box (Bourges, France).
He presented his films at several festivals, including the Rome Film Festival, the Torino Film Festival and the FID Marseille International Film Festival.
In 2007 he co-founded the collective Blauer Hase, with which he curates the periodical publication ‘Paesaggio’ and the ‘Helicotrema’ festival.
In 2013 he has edited “Spoilsport. Questions around a social space”, a book of essays and interviews around the social space surrounding contemporary sport, the mechanisms regulating its production of values, its historical background, featuring interviews with, among others, Stefano Baldini, Julia Bryan-Wilson, RoseLee Goldberg, Douglas Gordon and Jørgen Leth.
