Research summary

Projection art; the space of illusion

From the perspective of a visual artist Sophie Ernst's research project looks at the presumed distinction between screen reality and material reality. In her artistic practice projections can be seen as analogies or magical symbols, visualizing the invisible.

 

Biography

Sophie Ernst (1972, DE) was trained as a mechanic at BMW(1992-1995, Munich) before studying sculpture at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in Maastricht (1995-1998). Ernst is a graduate of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Amsterdam, 2000). In her artistic work she inquires into the notion of projection in relation to architecture, memory, culture, historical objects, urban spaces, and identity.

Solo exhibitions include: “Memory is an Ideal Place” Kunstverein Heidelberg (2013, D), “HOME” Yorkshire Sculpture Park (2012, UK). For the occasion of this exhibition the Yorkshire Sculpture Park published the book “HOME: Architecture of Memory” (2012). Recent group exhibitions are: 6th Moscow Biennale (2015, RU), Asia Triennial Manchester (2014, UK), International Video Festival Cairo (2013, EG), “Move on Asia” ZKM (2013, D), “Lines of Control” Nasher Museum (2013, USA), “Lines of Control” Johnson Museum of Art, (2012, USA), Sharjah Biennial (2009, UAE), “Moving Journeys” Royal Geographical Society (2008, UK), ShContemporary (2007, CN)

Ernst previously was Assistant Professor at the Beaconhouse National University in Lahore and held a ‘Lehrauftrag’ at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. She frequently presents slide-lectures on ideas pertaining to her work.
