Joost Grootens investigates new map making practices of technology companies and amateurs. As a graphic designer Grootens researches the blurring maker-user divide in the production of visual information.
Joost Grootens (1971, NL) studied architectural design at Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. As a graphic designer he is self-taught. His studio designs maps and books in the fields of architecture and urban space, specializing on atlases. Among his clients are nai010 Publishers, Lars Müller Publishers, Phaidon Press, gta Verlag, Royal Danish Academy School of Architecture Copenhagen, ETH Zürich and Van Abbemuseum.
Grootens has won numerous prizes for his designs. Among them the ‘Goldene Letter’ and two Gold Medals in the Best Book Design from all over the World competition. In 2009 he was awarded the Rotterdam Design Prize. A monograph about his work titled ‘I swear I use no art at all’ was published by 010 Publishers in 2010.
Grootens is head of the Master Information Design at Design Academy Eindhoven. He has also lectured at various institutions in Asia, Europe and North America.
