Research summary
The politics of design: the liberating potential of communication design in post/modern times – Towards a critical methodology in communication design
This project aims at an integral history of mentalities in communication design that will provide insight into (the backgrounds of) the differences in (visual) language. These differences range from reduced, limited forms of communication where the message is seen as an object, to complex, enriched forms of communication, where the message is seen as an ‘event’. That is to say: the message perceived as a static, consumerist versus a dynamic, activating ‘operation’. The research starts from the question: What is the relationship between discourse (mentality), social conditions and forms (of expression) of communication design: how and under what conditions can communication design develop operational strategies that empower the onlooker by encouraging the formation of independent opinion?
